seven days and counting

The fundraising is over, for the most part, and our trip is ready to begin. We had our last informational team meeting tonight. We then realized we needed to have another meeting on Wednesday to finalize, or start, our backyard bible school lesson for 250 children we will meet next week. They will all need a craft and our love and attention. I can’t wait.

When I returned to some of the same locations last summer that I had visited 6 months earlier I saw children I remembered from that trip. Their faces really tend to get burned into your mind. I knew with all the visitors that come and minister to them each year that there would be no way they would remember me and that was ok. Me remembering them was more than enough for me. As we left the area where these children lived called “The Hole” I was startled as one child came running from out of no where and tackled me from behind. I had no idea what was going on until I turned and saw his face and then I knew. He was the child in the photo with me that I had looked at over and over since my first visit. He clung to me just as he had the first time I met him. My eyes welled up with tears of joy as we hugged and laughed. He didn’t understand a word I said or vice versa but he knew and so did I. We both knew that each had remembered the other and that was enough.

I am scheduled to visit “The Hole” again a week from this Saturday. I can’t wait and pray he is still healthy and ready for another hug. I know I am.
